Remington Model 700 is a good gun, comes in different calibers and are not too awful expensive. Good hunting rifle.

I wish I had some of those odd rifles my Dad had back in the 70's...218 SuperBee, 257 Roberts and a couple others I can't recall. I have no idea why I would like to have them, I just kinda do.

Get this one in 308 load it with some 168 BTHP, spend the rest of your $1000 on a holographic site and if you can see it you can hit it You will be good to go. savagearms.com/firearms/model/10FCMSCOUTBut then my strategy will be if they are more than 300 yards and not coming to me, I will just fade away. F-168gr : Federal Gold Medal Match .308 Win 168gr HPBT (2600fps) Zero at 100 and anything under will be fine, 200 you will drop 4 1/2 inches at 300 it will drop 16 inches. Hold that distance above the head and its welcome to the party. The 308 is perfectly capable of 800 yard shots, but you will need better sights and lots of practice. If you want to engage some one approaching you at 300 yards, clear several shooting lanes, place your self a marker (a piece of flag tape will also give you an idea of the wind) every 50 yards and practice to all of them. If you can hit a nine inch pie pan, you can hit a man. Or, you could just shoot a 9" pie pan full of holes from 10 yards and hang them out a 300, facing away from you with 300 written on them. They just might turn around then. I hand load with Sierra match kings boat tail hollow points. They are simply awesome. 1/4 MOA at 100 yards. I have a stubby gun though and they go subsonic for me at around 750 yards. I need to change powders and try to get some more speed behind them

the problem with big calibers (338 lapua and up) is that unless you are a very very good shot they are a total waste, .222, .243, .308 will all put down any 2 legged critter at 500 yards if you hit em right, and how often will you be shooting over 500 yards anyway, the only time i have ever shot voer 300 is in long range comp shoots. if i was going for long range over a .308 i would go to 6mmbr, stunningly fast and flat shooting round www.6mmbr.com/6mmbr.html

That is a fine looking gun Hunter. With my apologies to the fans of black plastic guns a wood and blued steel rifle is still my favorite, they just look so nice to me. Maybe I'm too old fashioned that can't be all bad. I'd love to fire that beauty!

There are some good looking 700's in 3006 on Gun Broker from 400 to 3000. But again, I don't call the 3006 a "big caliber" JMO The 30-06 with the right round can take down a moose. That's plenty big for me. LOL A .22 can take down a moose....if your close enough and a good shot BTW, i have the savage rilfeis in 3006 and .243 and both are tack drivers

Duck Man, I would be glad to relieve you of that worn old Mod 70. I run a retirement home for them, and one more is always welcome. ;D
