The M-16 cleaning kit for under $20 is what I chose for it's breakdown rod and compact versatility to clean pistol, rifle, and shot gun. The pouch will hold quite a bit, just add your caliber bore brushes, cleaner, patches, and small tools.

For liquids I swear by CLP (including the spray-on stuff) and Hopp's.
