Well, I looked into it some more and it looks like this is a special order for a small group of elite warriors. It's replacing the 1911s they already had. They just wanted a newer model with a rail and night sights. There were several other 1911 manufacturers that competed for the bid, but Colt won. I have no idea what testing caused the failures depicted in the pictures of my earlier post, but I have to speculate it would take some seriously over pressurized rounds to bust up those guns at the 12,000 mark. Anyhow, I told myself this to make me feel better about the 1911… These elite, very experienced warriors are different than most other soldiers in that they get to pick from any gun in the world. Whatever they wanted. They picked a 1911.

Got one and love it...I've got a Springfield 1911A1 (seen in my avitar) and will say it's a little picky on ammo though. I guess they didn't try the Glock out, could of gotten a lot of pistol for less $$ During the x9 trials, both the glock and ruger offerings spanked all other competition. Ruger pulled out of the competition when they gave barretta a mulligan letting them come out with the FS model (s for slidestop) after a few of the F models blew their slides off firing +p+ rounds. Glock (another euro offering at the time) pulled out when they were informed they had to give up their patents to get the contract. Even though glock is made in the U.S., I doubt you will ever see it as a general sidearm for any branch for that reason. As for the 1911 choice, I am glad to see that as 9mm ball sucks outside of +p+ or machine gun ammo. If your going to be stuck with ball ammo, it needs to be a .45.

All I know is that my Glock 22 fires everytime no matter what ammo I put in it and will work without much cleaning. I LOVE ;D my Kimber 45 but, it can be finiky and needs to be caressed. I would have to say, given a choice, in combat Id have to grab for the 22 because of its reliability. That said, nothing says "get off my lawn" like leveling that 45! JMO and subject to change.....

I own both those weapons. I've actually had more jams from my Glock 22 than the Kimber 1911. To be fair though, I've fired the Glock more. As far as going to war with one of them, the .40 isn't approved, so you're left with a choice between 9MM and .45ACP. I'd take a .45 hands down for a weapon of war, especially since we're restricted to ball ammo. Now, the choice is double or single stack .45 auto. Being as military people have all hand sizes, I'd stick with the single stack. So what't the best single stack .45 auto in the world? 1911 hands down.

I'd rather have the .45. I qualified expert on the M9 but I don't like the position of the safety. My small hands force me to use my other hand to switch off the safety. On the 1911 I can use just the hand that is holding the pistol. That's my biggest complaint about the M-9 aside from the 9mm ammo.

You right WILL - Choice between M9 and 1911...1911 all day baby! I used to carry the Baretta 92FS and it gets heavy at the end of the day was never happy about being restricted to that weak little ball ammo too (NATO can be such a PIA!). The only advantage I saw to it was that it had a long sight radius so it was a bit more forgiving. I will add a point of information here unique to the USCG; We are the only service currently using a 40 SW round (INCONUS only). We carry the Sig P229 DAK and I have found it to be an extremely reliable weapon.
