I could not think of a situation, be it Home Defense, Hunting, Psychological inpact, or packing weapon, where the Remington 870 12ga isn't top dog. Yes, there are more "SUITABLE" firearms for different situations, (Like Walking down main street on a sunny Sunday afternoon), but for all around, "I NEED A GUN" situations, the shotgun can't be beat. A person "NEEDS" a 5 gun Battery MINIMUM. Remington 870 Ruger 10-22 Handgun Long Range Rifle Tactical Carbine If I had to 'Grab ONE" and go, No Hesitation, It would be a Remington 870. WC I don't use an 870 or a 10-22 I opted for a Mossy 500 in 20 and Henry for my 22. To each their own and I totally understand how much more versatility you have with a 12 but...with the majority using them it could be easier to come across 20ga shells. The Ruger is a fine gun for sure and very reliable but the Henry shoots shorts long and long rifle and you can mix and match in the mag tube. I also opted for 2 pistols and a tactical carbine as my primary but in all honesty the wife will likely carry the shotty and her 9mm carbine and I my AR and Henry. and to the OP, I think either a 12ga pump or a good 22lr would fill most any needs. People that laugh at a 22 for protection have yet to stand in front of me and let me shoot them with it... They all have their place I think but those two are the closest to jacks of all trades as you get
