Hi all, I had my first contact on PSK31 the other day, only using 20w on 15m, I made contact with a station over 6200Km + away. This gets me thinking! if the SHTF during bad sun spots etc HF would be gash! knowing DATA modes get out better, this stands as a plus! Assuming the Internet and cell networks are still working! there highly likely to be clogged with people trying to make contact for many various reasons that may have occurred! as we know, this does render them nets useless. ie - the new years eve text etc So the question is, do we think the likes of PSK31 etc are a viable option for emergency comms in a SHTF scenario? "I do" All the best. John

Sorry to appear clueless, but I don't know what this is, I'm assuming a short wave?

Thanks for the info, though has a cool factor in a SHTF senario with no electric even if you adapt yours to solar power or 12 volt DC with 110 converter I'm thinking very few would be set up for it, of course life is about options.

Hi John, I think it could be very effective mode to use as an emergency way of communicating in any band aloud in ham radio communications. The advantages would be smaller bandwidth and lower output power, which makes batteries last longer or a generator run using less fuel, or even mobile as long as someone else does the communications. I have a RIGblaster from West Mountain Radio that I use with my IC-706MKII to work the digital modes. It has been a while, but I think this fall when I am home for the winter I will set up the digital station again. 73, Mike

Any of the non phone modes are likely to have better communication capabilities whether it be CW or PSK31. They simply do better, over greater distance, with less power than voice comms on the HF bands. Also, because PSK31 is less likely to be "heard" except for the few die hards that use it security is greater. While current rules prohibit using secret codes, in a complete SHTF scenario where the rules are gone, PSK31 lends itself easilly to the use of secret codes for communicating with your group of friends. A simple book code could be used by everyone in the group and short of an MIT grad it isn't going to get cracked.
