great video. I've played around with this too....mostly just for kicks
I think this is one of those things that is great to know about because you may find yourself in a situation where these are your best resources for making fire....but as far PLANNING on what to carry I agree with your preference for not carrying steel wool....you can plan to carry something that will work better than steel wool and a battery...

As you have shown this method works very well with the finer steel wools and I wanted to throw this bit of caution out there...S.O.S. Pads are steel wool with a detergent imbedded in the pad....I am sure yall already knew that...anyway...a local vol. fire fighter changed the 9v battery out of his radio and tossed it in the trash can. Unbeknown to him, his wife had thrown away a used S.O.S. / Brillo pad in the trash can earlier. That 9v landed on the pad. The thing is that the battery was low in charge and there was a delay in ignition...they went to bed about 20 minutes later. 5 minutes after they were in the bed the kitchen was engulfed in flames. They were able to save the house with damage to the kitchen and living room. What I've taken from this is that when I toss my 9 volts in the trash I wrap the posts with electrical tape, or wrap the battery in cellophane.

around here we recycle dead batteries, the dump has a spot reserved for them next to the propane tank collection area.....

I use 0000 steel wool because3 volts or more will provide embers, meaning (2) AA batterys such as used in a mini mag lite. That way if you have your mini mag already it eliminates having to carry an additional 9 volt.
