news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57486956-1/solar-bag-concept-purifies-water-as-you-walk/Cool! Except the dumb butt's got his cap on backward. This design concept is both a shoulder bag-style container to transport water from a distant source, as well as a tool to purify it. The container is made of polyethylene, which allows UV rays to pass through the clear outer layer and kill most of the bacteria in the water. It's similar to purifying water with sunlight and bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A black polyethylene layer forms the back layer, and helps reflect the UV rays and heat the water, speeding up the purification process. The bag can apparently decontaminate 2.5 gallons of water in about six hours. The Solar Bag can also be hung on a wall or laid out on the ground during the purification time, according to Lynch's Web site.

We already know that in third world countries, refilling used water bottles and laying them in the sun all day is a common way to purify water for drinking. His hat's on the right way, all the rest of him's just pointed the wrong direction. LOL

It has a black PET back to increase the solar heat, which following your thread would be simple enough to improvise. I definitely get your point.
I could see painting one side of a Zip Lock with flat black paint or more permanently, black plastic on the outside of the bag.

Never have understood why some clowns wear their hat backwards. The bill was designed to keep the sun out of your eyes. Wonder what gang he belongs to?

But when I looked closer noticed his ears were sunburned. So I made the assumption his neck had also become sunburned and he turned his hat around to shade his sore neck. Also the hat is green, so he is a fisherman not in a gang. So he should have had a bandanna, but the color would have to depend on where he lived.

Seriously I am trying out something along that line. Where we know we may camp we have added a 6' piece of 1" black PVC pipe to the cache there. The tubing already has a screw cap on each end. The idea is you can make a couple of loops of the pipe and hold it under water to fill it. Then lay it in the sun to help purify the water. It actually gets pretty hot. Hot enough to use for coffee or to make instant oak meal. Without making a fire.

Deck is high enough to get under the pipe. Maybe put a shower head in the pipe. Couple of problems to be solved: The water's awful heavy and may require some reinforcement of the deck/banisters which is quite doable. Second, the water gets too hot for a shower and an additional source of cold water would have to be supplied and a means of mixing the hot and cold. Again quite doable. Just have to get it all figured out and find my "round tuit" button. Oh yeah, it may need venting and would serve to "purify" water as well.

I was thinking about the black PVC on day when I was adding water to the compost. We ran 100 feet of 3/4 black pipe along the top of a fence to get water from barrels collected off the roof. The water in the pipe is too hot to water plants with until you run out what it was holding. Rather then let those five gallons or so go to waste we drain the line into a bucket first. Most times we will just leave it in the bucket and use it after it cools.
I actually gets too hot to hold you hand in it. Since the water comes off a tin roof to start with and is filtered coming out of the bucket, getting it that hot should make it safe to drink in a pinch. The black hose would be less likely to get algae to grow in it and a little bleach water ran through it would fix it if it did.
