I'm looking to save some $$$ on one of my ARs and replace the barrel as opposed to the entire upper. It's a 20" barrel. I don't know what it's made out of, but I want to replace it and keep it as a spare barrel.
I've done some perusing around and found a number of potential "candidates" that are made out of 416 Stainless Steel (match-grade, HBAR type; but I'm open to other suggestions). Anybody got info or personal experience on the pros/cons on this type of steel (performance, endurance, etc.)?

The typical grade used in firearms is along the lines of ludlum stainless. It's a martensitic stainless steel unlike austenitic in that it depends on it's grain structure for it's corrosion resistance rather than it's composition. Performance and endurance are both good if it's made right.

OK. Any particular barrel makers/brands that one recommends? AR-Stoner looks like the brand for people on a tight budget. Krieger seems to be really good if not arguably top of the line based on reviews, but the prices I'm seeing are such I could buy another upper entirely.

what are you looking to do with it? AR's while a fine weapon, are well. the Krieger Varmatch 26in. .920 dia is a fine barrel.

I went with the black hole weaponry due to the polygonal rifling.
