Ok well here goes nothing. I have a few extra dollars laying around and I am thinking of building an AR for a couple of reasons.
1) I am knowledgeable with the functions of the m4 and while I could probably fairly easily learn a new rifle fairly quickly, I guess I just don't want to.
2) I would really like to build one as I want to know the inner workings of them not just how to shoot them and field strip them.
3) Everyone online and everyone in person has a reason why this or that or the other is the best company. I am adding them all up and trying to eliminate the outliers and go from there. Who has opinions they would like to throw in?
Let me hear what you have to say.
I think I am sold on the AR platform, though the caliber is still a little in question between 5.56 and .308. Any opinions on this topic are welcomed as well.

first off...the 5.56 platform is the AR-15 and can be built for about or under $600/700, the .308 platform is the AR-10 and is much more expensive to build...the workings are the same the concept is the same but they are two different rifles. AR-15's are the best route to go due to the fact there are SOOOOO many different calibers that you can chamber the upper in.

Learning the inner workings is one of the things that I learned doing my Beowulf project. I'm also looking into (perhaps you can too) doing an AR15 armorer's course during the school semester. I also fully concur with alex on which is cheaper to build, although you can ultimately make an AR out of just about any caliber.

Buit mine for 681.50 using quality parts bought on sale. I can source them if you wish but in both accuracy and reliability it has out performed at least one DPMS. Were i in your shoes i would opt as i did for a mid lenght rifle. It gives you a full two inches longer sight radius. Carbinem4 clones are the most popular and have the most support. Full rifle platform will be my next build in eiher 556 or 762. That has not been decided. The 7.62 will cost more no matter what. Also the 7.62 will have to use magazines with bullet cut feed lips rather than square. I suggest for sporting a 1 in 9 twist for any round up to 68gr. Anything heavier i suggest 1 in 8 polygonal. While mine is direct gas impingment i will be adding a gas piston system per suggestion of cwi. DGI works fine for my purpose. If you are not in a humid climate skip hard chrome lining. The lini.g as yt cannot be mad consistant throughout he barrel lenght. A quality Wilson barrel in 4130 chrome-molly will do everything you need short of going to war. By that i mean thousands of rounds at high fire rates fordaya on end. Bolt carriwr group being chromed is preference and i have found no noticable difference in reliability. Mine is alloy oher han he bolt itself. A recoil buffer seems to make things smoother shooting wih a push type recoil rather than a snap and is easier to remain on target in rapid fire followup shooting. I chose an a4 flat top uppee and have both red dot and dual aperture sights. For options and the ability to add a magnifyer. Butt stock i hose a four position but in hindsight would get he six for better adjustments due to clothing. I also chose an a2 front sight that allows me to co-witness he front post with the red dot. A standard trigger is plenty good enough by adding a lighter spring and honing the rough edges. If you need more info let me know.

I would really appreciate any input on the different manufactures as well as why you choose them specifically. I am going to be spending some money very shortly and trying to do my research.

Looks good. Depending on what you intend to do with it you may want a heavier barrel. The barrel on there means it'll be light and have a good sense of maneuverability. A heavier barrel is more desirable for sustained firing for long periods of time. I learned this from a Marine buddy who took my bull barrel and lathed it to a .750".

MMMMMMMM..............AR's......................GOOD.
WCR Built his M4 for less than $600. He used a Rock River Lower with Rock River Guts, BullDog Barrel, Some kind of forged Flattop upper, Rock River BCA, and Rock River Furnature.
All it takes is to pour over Gunbroker, AR Forums, and local Classifieds and you will find deals. Research what a good price is, pay attention to inflated shipping charges, and be ready to POUNCE!
When you frequent these sites, you will also find GREAT deals on ammo.
Some of my GREAT purchases lately were....
NEW IN BOX STAG ARMS M4 Model 2 with 10 Mags in carry case...$500
840 Rounds of Mil Surplus 5.56 .......$200
Thats 700 for a case full of WOOP A$$ for $700 total.
You just can't beat deals like that.
6 months from now, those prices will double, or TRIPPLE~!
When you see it..............JUMP ON IT.

The biggest savings come from building it yourself simply because of the taxes and you do the labor to put it together. If you buy a complete rifle you pay the federal firearms tax on the full purchase price. Build it yourself and you only pay on the price for the lower receiver (the part with the serial #) and then you can get all the other pieces online without the Federal firearms tax. You go from paying a tax on a $700-$1200 rifle to paying a federal tax on a part that is $100 or less. Considering the tax rate is 11% it can save you some money. Live in a state with a sales tax and they add that right on top of that also.

I know a fella who has two of them and both are Plumcrazy lowers. His only problem was a series of uncontrolled slam fires while on the range one day. He took it to the shop he purchased it from and they replace the whole fire control group with a DPMS FCG and he's never had another problem. He went ahead and replaced the FCG on the second one with another DPMS FCG just for safe measure. He has one upper that's a DPMS flat top and the other is a Bushmaster A2.

I have an A2 carry handle on mine though it is a flat top. I like the looks and for a potential combat weapon I do not want to rely on optics. Been looking at a carry handle mounted red dot system or scope.
