I recently read a state government site which tried to list some items that might/would be necessary for 72 hours of "downtime". Some people had made fun of that state's attempt to at least get more info out there for people to contemplate, saying that it should be thrown in the "for what it's worth file"....and it occurred to me that although 72 hours is probably an absolute minimum that anyone SHOULD have available, and that the state was reiterating what FEMA had announced, it should not be ridiculed in its efforts.
Any attempt by govt which tries to get citizens TO HELP THEMSELVES, is in my estimation a good thing. Putting up some information on a website cannot cost much, and perhaps can get others interested in prepping in general. Since a large part of the population seems to wander around in semi-darkness waiting on someone to tell them what to do I just don't see how ridiculing this state's effort will help the efforts of prepping in general.
I am by nature a minimalist when it comes to government, and anything after securing the freedom and safety of its citizens should be scrutinized carefully before any action is taken. Obviously I am in the minority in this belief, and that is okay. I just don't see where ridicule can help our efforts.
Am I wrong, misguided, or just not seeing something? Is 72 hours a good guideline to begin someone's efforts, which mimics FEMA's suggestions, or should it go further in explaining why larger preparations would be better? At some point I can see why or how further preps might get into more controversial areas of thought and opinion.
