I've been practing with the bow drill. I've had success with chinese privet, which is abundant down here as it is an invasive hedge. The set I used was smaller than reccommended, but I still got a coal pretty fast. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIh9WPlKIu4

Very nice. Looks like a great species for the task. Have you tried splitting some and making a fire saw yet? I would be interested to see the outcome.

Not with chinese privet, I haven't. I have had success with the bamboo fire saw.
