Back in 2011,with the "arab spring"uprising/revolution/whatever going on..there was a news story about the pyramid horses being abandoned. The pyramid horses are horses rented to tourists to ride around the pyramids and surrounding area. With the uprising/revolution,no tourists ,no money to feed the horses ,so the horses were left to starve. The well-to-do stables had no problem in feeding their horses, the "mom and pop" operations were the ones affected
A bunch of expats and Egyptians got together raised enough money to feed 600 horses, and treat a variety of wounds.BTW this feeding operation continues as needed.
What I learned:
Good veterinarians are in short supply in Egypt,so someone with horse experience and right equipment/drugs/medicines got the job done.
What was most needed was horse dental floats and device to hold the horses mouth open to float(file) the teeth. With sharp teeth horses cannot eat properly, waste their food and cannot gain weight.
The second most important item was vaccines/antibiotics.Malaria is rampant in Egypt.
The third was a skilled farrier with knowledge of dealing with horses with laminitis--the hoofs split and separate and can progressively become lifethreatening.
The fourth is a good harnessmaker/saddlemaker most of the harnesses are pieced together and cause saddle sores/abrasions.
If you have horses/mules/burros prepare for them too

I couldn't agree more!!! Not only should a person with horses or other livestock prep for them, but they should also learn how to do basic things like trim hooves, float teeth, clean sheaths, give shots, open abcesses, apply sutures, treat wounds, etc.
Great post!

Glad ya'll found it helpful.
If you want to see how it is in Egypt for horses and camels,on Facebook-search for "Marte Kjoell-Prince Fluffy Kareem" Also, Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) has a Facebook page on their dog/cat shelter but there is some horsey stuff.

Good post...although I have no lifestock, I do have 2 dogs and 2 parrots to worry about. I've been buying them extra food and storing it in a corner for when everything goes to crap.

One of the horses, was dropped off, literally, with a high fever.the reason was the horse was given a shot, that later got infected,in less than two weeks.despite the antibiotics, fluids the horse died.
