A fella just can't seem to have enough bullets JMHO.
About a year ago I decided to buy at least one box of bullets every time I went to the store that stocked them.
It's amazing how many ya can get that way. Give it a try.

I'm honestly a little bit torn on just HOW MUCH ammo is enough....
Hard Core gun guys like to say "there's never enough"....and I can see that point of view...
But I really think it depends on WHO you are and what you are planning to do with them.
I think when it comes to .22LR....the sky's the limit.
If you're talking about pistol ammo....well HOW many pistol fights are you really going to walk away from? So on top of however much practice ammo you think you'll need, I think somewhere in the range of an additional 200-300 rounds for each gun.
Rifle cartridges is where I really don't know the answer...I think maybe 1,000 per barrel is a good idea. I can understand folks who just want to accumulate more and more forever....but at some point I feel like more ammo won't help me survive if I'm facing a bad enough situation.
"to the victor go the spoils of war"
So, either I'll be alive and I get to scavenge their guns and ammo....OR I'll be dead and they'll get to take mine. If they are truly bad guys, the last thing I want to do is re-supply their mission of terror on other innocent families....

I actually have never stocked ammo just for preps/survival proposes. I like to shoot, so it takes some rounds for that. But I have always feared the day when they may try to take it away or 2nd amendment rights, period. There have been forces trying to do just that forever.
As for the OPs question, what makes one comfortable is gonna be close for that person. JMWAG

J, all of us probably have different reasons for having ammo. Each of us has to look inside to answer what makes us feel comfortable. I can find no comfort? I suppose I am a compulsive obsessive hoarder. My way of coming at a situation is I can never have too much or too many anything. But, I can have too few, or too little. If, the plug were pulled today, right now, what I have will be all there is ever going to be. That makes me uncomfortable. I have no idea what will happen tomorrow? I remember talking to alot of family members about the depression and war years. They are what would have been considered well off in those days and had money, but they still could not go to town and buy what they wanted because it was not "Available". That stuck in my mind. So put back what makes you at peace with your self. Chances are we will never need or use any of this 'Stuff', anyway. Oh buy the way, the answer to your question on the book was Yes. Alex just read it.

I REALLY liked One second after as well. ;D one of my faves...
back to ammo...if you are using it as a hedge against inflation, (figuring you'll use it all up in hunting or target practice anyways) then it makes sense to always buy some every time you have any extra cash.
For me, I stock different rounds for practice than I would necessarily use in self defense or property defense....classic example is 00 buckshot...I rarely use that in practice, I practice with bird shot or maybe #6 or #4 shot.... so how much 00 buck shot is "enough" for SHTF scenarios?
I don't know the answer...I'm just posing the question from a different point of view...gun enthusiasts when planning their stores often assume they'll be winning their altercation and that if they LOSE it would be due to lack of ammo. There are many reasons you could lose besides lack of ammo (lack of accuracy, being outnumbered, being surprised, being outgunned or outranged...) in those instances all your extra stores become a handy dandy re-supply for scumbags...

I've been bringing a can of powder home every chance I get. Got a good dry place to store it.
Anybody know the shelf life of unopened powder. H4895 and Reloader 15 mainly.

Oddly I don't stock ammo for a shtf type deal. I really don't think it will ever happen. (Still best to prepare). With the stroke of a pen all manufacture and sales could end at a mad mans whims. Then it will be too late to lay some back. Plus my life time of buying ammo has never seen it go DOWN. I have $70.00 a case ammo I got in the early ninetys that cost $4/500.00 now. So yes it is a good investment. Wish I had bought more and shot less. LOL

Geron, Not sure about modern powders as all of my stock gets loaded with in 6 months to a year of purchase but I've got some 2fg and 3fg that is over 20 years old and will still send a smoke pole a kickin!!!
