If I had it to do all over again, I'd have gotten a Colt A3 with a 20 inch barrel and removable rear sights. The extra 4" of barrel makes a huge difference in the ability of a .223 to kill at distance. I believe Colt has a very good reputation, and I trust their products. That plus 7 P-Mags and you're good to go. EDIT- I have to change my post because I now realize Colt no longer makes a 20" A4 flat top with a flash supressor. I guess they aren't cool enough anymore. Anyhow, I'd go to Rock River and have them custom build my gun from the factory... www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=22520 inch bbl, flat top/ removable front and rear sights, vortex flash supressor. I'd add folding front and rear sights and a red dot. I'm on the fence about the rail hand guards. I use them as a cop to hold my flashlight. As a civilian, I don't think I would be in an offensive/search roll, so the light may not be needed. Tough call because that adds alot of weight to the gun.

You have to build your own to get the best quality for the buck. Mpul tactical stock Mpul gen 2 flip up sites Flat top stainless front gas block with picatinny rail Mpul front hand guards with picatinny rails and foregrip Black hole weaponry 400 series stainless polygonal rifling match barrel 1:8 M4 aerospec M4 upper flat top 6 position Mbus stock Grim reaper lower 7075 T6 DPMS target trigger group and lower grip. Black rain ordinance NIB-x Nickle boron bolt carrier group EO tech 552 A65 HGS Completely dressed out ~1,250.00 total. That's not bad at all. not considering the cost of the eotech.

I can personally tell you thats NOT true. It bought a remington 870 Supermag there for $357 in full camo. The EXACT same gun, EXACT same fit and finish at Bass pro was $499. They buy there guns in bulk. That is why they are cheaper. You buy 500 guns and spread them across 100 stores instead of one dealer only being able to buy a handful, the price is cheaper. lets put it this way, walmart it not stupid and if you do your home work you will see that many guns that walmart does sell is not the same thing you can get at a gun dealer. If your sure about the guns your buying then it's all good, no harm in being careful......right. I have at times purchased guns at walmart but that was years ago and many walmarts will not sell guns in the stores anymore. that may be so but i have not read it myself. it is not however true of the other things mentioned like towels tires and paper plates. since I work where we make them i know that part is true. anyway back to the op, I did not get stainless or chromed anything, used a3 front sights/gas block. if I was building one today I MIGHT go chromed carrier. thats why mine was about half of his...and the eotech. plain old dual aperture sights for me.

At the last gun show xwing and I went to, DPMS were going for 500-650. According to what you got with the basic platform.
DPMS was having issues getting guns out there to sell, cuz they were being bought up as fast as they could produce them. Seems they have overcome that problem.
If the DPMS is as good a shooter as any other, makes no sense IMO to buy something more expenisive. If you are buying to keep and have for your self defense, it's whatever makes you comfortable. Just saying...
I personally have decided pretty much against the AR platform. But that just me.

looks like I got screwed when I bought mine. ...or maybe I just bought during the height of demand? I paid $975 I had a friend with me who supposedly "knew AR-15s" and he said it was a fair deal, not a good deal, not a bad deal. That was about 2 years ago...

I doubt you got screwed unless this is the gun you bought. The DPMS Sportical I think is there bare bones AR. I'm sure yours probably has some better features.

Yes and some have better components on that base platform. Mine could be classified as a basic custom. Got the best quality items i could affors. No rails or other tacticool stoff but i do plan to add a single rail light mount and a red dot cowitness setup on a cantalever mount. Cant affors eotech or aimpoimt but there aare ihers. Missj i. Dont think you were screwed. Location supply and demand make as much difference as components. Without a build sheet to see what went where you did average.

yes, mine does have rails, and flip up sights....and what else? That is about all I can think of off the top of my head....
I love my flip up sights by the way. everyone keeps trying to talk me into getting a scope...whatever. I've got it dialed in at 170+ yard with iron sights. I figure I'll get a scope on my next "anti-personnel" rifle but I don't want to mess with the nice thing I've got going with this one...

That puts you above the majority that give it lip service while the rifle remains on the rack at the gun store. You would probably be surprised at the number of folks who talk smack about it, but don't actually own rifle number one. I have one such person that I work with. He was constantly going on about this and that 'tacticool' element, how his brother was big into guns, and how much he disagreed with the concept of bare bones rifles etc, etc, etc. I finally meet his brother by chance at a local range. According to the brother, the coworker only owned a nagant. A nagant is better than a rock, but a far cry from the AR he talked so much about.
