I may have an opportunity to purchase a Marlin Trapper in .357/.38 -- 20 years old, and never been fired.
Does anyone have any experience with this little lever-action rifle? Opinions? Thoughts? What do you think would be a fair price?
I've seen similar, short, .357's from Winchester and a few others. Any thoughts on the relative quality between the different manufacturers?
THANKS for any input!

Buy it. You will not regret it.
I regret selling mine. VERY handy little carbine.
Marlin as good as it gets.
If you can get it for less than 4 bills, I'd buy in a heartbeat.
Let us know what ya do!!
Jimmy

TJ, I think you would like it. I have owned two over the years and liked them, except for one thing. I always load 158 gr SWC lead for my handguns, and they sometimes didn't load smoothly. The factory jacketed ammo worked fine as long as there was no step down in the bullet. Price varies on the pre safety Marlins. Right now they are pretty much in demand, so it is more what it is worth to you. I'd buy one like you described for $4-450 range and not kick at all. I found a new model octagon barrel the other day for $600 and went back with the cash and it was gone. Hope it works out.

I have four of them. If you don't want it, tell me where to get it ;D. If it's new/never been fired, 500-550 Shot it should be 400-525 depending on condition around here.
Do understand that the SASS/cowboy action shooters tend to horde that particular rifle.
If it has the octagon barrel the price goes up significantly. I have two in 44 special/44 mag and one of the 38's is an octagon.
You will not regret the purchase with one caveat: Because of it's popularity, it has been the subject of some wannabe gunsmithing. Be sure no one has touched it that didn't know what they are doing. One strong sign of that is buggered up screw heads, and side plate gnarl marks.

They're getting harder and harder to find.. I'd jump on it because of it's versatility.. .357/.38 rifle/pistol ammo... sweeter than .22 rifle/pistol..

You've convinced me! They're asking $500. I have one guy in line ahead of me. He's a friend and knows I'd like it. I think he'll let me make the buy...I hope he'll let me!

Either trim the brass to 1.280" and load for an overall length of 1.59"; alternatively, you can drop your powder load .5-1 grain and crimp over the front drive band slightly. (the later being the same thing you had to do with the SW27/28 revolvers)

BUMMER! Without a word to me, he sold to someone who just up and offered $600.00. Didn't even get a chance to counter-offer...not that I would at that price...but, it would have been nice to have the choice...
Oh, well...
