This is a great "convenience" idea. Would also make a wonderful "gift" idea. It is much more a 90 day supply rather than a long term storage idea. The one's I packed are now about a year old. We'll eat them this winter to see how they "survived" storage. I wouldn't look at storing these meals over 2-3 years at the most. But like all storage it's best to use and rotate it.
Some Ideas of my own from my experience with the packing of the jars/bags.
Pack most of the powders (milk, spices) in a separate bag/container and place in the jar. They won't "hold up" like the rest of the ingredients but will clump. Adding a desiccant pack would help also.
The recipe makes a heck of a lot of food for just two people. One jar's enough for up to a week for two old folks that simply don't eat that much.
If you don't already have the dehydrated/FD ingredients you can drop around 2 bills for the necessary stuff . . . but it makes a heck of a lot of food.
Pasta soup recipe:
1 3/4 c Macaroni
3/4 c lentils
3/4 c dried chopped mushrooms
1/2 c Parmesan cheese
3 1/2 T. dried minced onion
2 1/2 T Chicken bouillon granules
1 T + 1 t Italian seasoning
1 T Parsley
1 3/4 t oregano
1/4 t garlic powder
Add-on: 1 pint cooked chicken cubes
10 1/2 c water
Directions: Remove oxygen absorger. Boil water. Add soup mix and chicken. Reduce heat and cover. Simmer for 40-50 minutes until lentils are tender, stirring occasionally.
Kathy includes one page per recipe of labels for the jars that can be photocopied and taped to the jars. The labels include the Add on ingredients and Directions for prep.
