Think like a thief... most crooks are not going to bust out a window to go after a suit case or a back pack, unless it looks like a laptop bag. They will bust out a window to take the entire car, or a radio if its half way decent. Even a coffee cup full of change and loose bills. Point is, don't give the thief a reason to break out your window in the first place and you wont have to worry about your bag.
No one wants your silly get home bag, they want your iPod. While they are in there getting your spare change and iPod they might take your bag because its handy. Put your iPod away.

The CRV 2005 has a portable table in the back, under it is enough space to put a backpack. There must be other cars just like that :

Bummer. My brother has the 2005 and that's what he uses to put his stuff. My father has the new version and they completly taken off the table and that space to put the tire in.
