One thing for anyone considering it, you can’t just use a car alternator, the bearings just aren’t big enough, you need to find one with over sized bearings. Or just build one, its just magnets and winding and bearings, or maybe use a heavy duty car alternator and rebuild the front end with bigger bearings. I’ll post more on that as we get into our rebuild. Just a note for you, automotive alternators work fine for wind gensets. Seen plenty of them and built a few for said use. The design of your wind generator is what limits what sort of gen/alt you can use. The use of a jack shaft with high ratio pulleys, in wind gensets enables one to use practically any type gen/alt. Just wanted to insert that as there are many other designs other that a direct drive and not limit the thought process for other designs. Thanks Jimmy

Don't be sorry, thanks for the input. We have some auto alterators and wanted to use them but read we couldn't do to the bearings. So we will be using one in an example very soon. I would think in a SHTF situation there may be many auto alterators available.

OK I just read a free book from Kindle called 'Wanted' and the main character had a retreat that using wind and solar kept a steady supply of electricity to operate a few things like a fridge or freezer and a bank of lights in a hydroponics set up. Not too much detail but it sounds like what you are making.
