I frequently hear recommendations from firearms instructors, or articles etc. that it is recommended you have an attorney already on retainer and have their phone number memorized or at least their card in your wallet in case you are ever involved with a self defense shooting.
Does anybody actually do this? I have not. I figure the likelihood of me actually NEEDING that specific service is very slim and therefore may not justify taking that step.
anybody else have any input on this?

I wouldn't call it "on retainer" as I believe that infers payments even for nonuse of their services. After speaking with many and family members being in the legal field, I have an attorney I will call if the need arises.

After some consideration, it doesn't sound like a good idea. Get to know who the attorneys are in the area, who handles those kind of cases etc, but not retain one. I am not convinced the fact that you kept an attorney on retainer couldn't be used against you in that kind of case. www2.nycbar.org/Publications/reports/show_html_new.php?rid=137

Not a good idea in my book. It would seem that if you already had a retained lawyer, it looks that you were "LOOKING" for trouble.
IF, something bad happened, you will have time to contact a lawyer. DON'T forget the NRA "if you are a member" and they jump on cases of self defense also.

I am a member and don't they cover your legal expenses if you are invloved in a shooting?

I have used "my" lawyer for a few different things and yes, he has some of my money just in case. I have three reasons for this. 1. If I need him, I know he will be there 2. If I need him I know the money is already there. 3. My lawyer is awesome! I would hate to call him and find out the other guy just hired him.
Nothing like needing some thing and not having any way to pay for it.
