Well I'm finally going to get myself into the woods tomorrow. As some may know I wasn't able to hunt at all last year but that won't happen this year! I'm going to scout out some woods that I hunted for years but have not been to in several, it will be good to be back up in those hills. This pace is up around a town called Clinton and it is pretty rough and tumble terrain but holds some really nice deer and turkey too. Gun season opens next Saturday morning and I want to just go up and scout for sign and check things out. Like I say I have hunted these woods for years and know every deer haunt there and which trees I'll more than likely hang my stands but it will be good to check for signs of how far along the rut is. Another thing I'll be doing is finding a good camping spot. In the past I always had a nice cabin to stay in with a well and power but I'll be camping out of the truck since the cabin is no more. I have some good spots in mind but need to do a look see anyway. I'll take the camera along and try and get some photos to share and maybe a little video too.

If you find Clinton go to hwy 16/9 which heads North. Then find Holly Mountain Air Park, that will be Holly Mtn. Rd. NW of the air park will be Holly Mtn, Cemetery, just West of that you will see a 90* right turn, there is a little dirt road right in that 90, all the woods to the west of that is where I hunt. It goes all the way over to State Hwy 65 where the Natural Bridge is located. Lots of cliffs, caves and rock bluffs. Even found an old time whiskey still up in those hills and a dope patch too! Hopefully all I find is a few deer to put in the freezer, although I am always looking for another buck to put on my wall too!

That is some pretty country. I have been through Clinton many times. I had a friend who lived in Mountain View for years. We used to go down near the Van Buren Rec Area where he had some honey holes. Years ago. Still have kin in the Rogers area, on Beaver Lake. More kin on Eufalaula, Tenkiller and Grand Lake in OK and Stockton Lake in MO. The whole four cornors there is where I spent the first 1/3 of my life. Also the Clinton at Truman. I have kin on 65 in MO from Marshall to Table Rock Lake. Seems like we all talked about living on one of the lakes and I am the only one who isn't. And I had me a nice place staked out on Chimmny Rock in OK for probably 10 years before I let it go. Now you made me sad. Quick someone remind me how those oil wells smell before I start thinking about moving.

Got water on it, that's important. Looks like a house burned down there on the edge.
Looks like pine mixed with oak. I like it mixed like that better than one or the other, deer seem to also. Especially if there is a transition between the two made by some wet land. or a low area.

Yep, that's up top where I turn off to go into the woods. That guy is an old school farmer/cattleman, I can hunt all his ground. I mostly hunt a bit further west, which is downhill from his home place (it's hard to see elevation on google earth) but if you can zoom in I hunt all those woods down to that creek which is in the bottom. I have hiked from there all the way cross country to hwy 65!

Wtrfwlr, I'm only about 40 miles from Natural Bridge. WoodyZ, where/who is your family on Tenkiller? That's my lake.

Well, NO.. one goes over the water and one is in the water.. it was the water that confused me.. Well the truth be told this one does neither, it's out in the middle of the woods. Still pretty cool to go and see.
