I'm looking for a 22 rifle for my grandson.
What I would like is your opinion on what to buy.
I want to get an older one I'm not impressed with the new guns in my price range no more than 200. To be honest most new guns look like junk to me. The quality just isn't there like it use to be. There are good guns on the market but not in the lower end 22s that I can find.
This is what I'm looking for.
Bolt action Tube or magazine feed. Hardwood stock. An accurate shooter.
Edit: He's 9 years old.

I really really wanted to get my daughter a bolt .22 but had a hard time finding a used one in good shape and a new one for a good price so I ended up going with the good old reliable Ruger 10/22. I hope your quest for a bolt gun goes better then mine did.

Hmm. How about a Crickett (I believe they're made by Keystone Sporting Arms)? They're bolt action, designed for kids (regarding size), and they tend to run for well under $200; even the wood stock ones.

I was going to suggest the Cricket also. BUT, it did not meet his criteria. It being single shot and having the manual cocker. But yes one of the best beginer guns going.

the Remington 514 can be had in a clip fed option. I bought my kids the single shot.

Thanks everyone. I stopped at a gun store yesterday when I was out and they had a Remington 514 in like new condition for a 125 bucks. It's now mine. ;D I checked the date code and it was made in Oct of 1964.
I test fired it and couldn't believe the accuracy. It's a tack driver for sure. ;D

I may need to do a little looking around for one of those for myself.

You did well Dennis, those are getting really hard to find in good shape. I had to pay $200 for a nice one last year about this time. I love the old Remington 22's. The 550-1's are a nice old auto as well if you get one that has'nt had a screw driver inside it and stripped the screws. Enjoy. Thanks everyone.
