The Kenwood TK762HG VHF is ham radio that covers the 2 meter band 144 to 148 MHz and can be expanded to operate up to 174 MHz which cover the frequencies of the fire department. There are a lot of fire departments that use amateur radio equipment for communications. If the radio is clean and in good shape it would be worth between $100 to $150 depending on their condition in my opinion.

I am not real smart yet as far as how far they can go...but I was told the 2 meter is good for local communications (as in just a few miles) unless you use repeaters to reach out farther. The 2 meter hand held is what has been recommended to me and told it is the best for beginners to get started on.

It also depends on elevation, obstacles, power level, antenna used, and other factors. A good 2 meter radio with a good antenna can go hundreds of miles in the right conditions and with enough wattage. Get up on a hill or mountain and those things can really go. People use VHF with a special antenna to talk to the International Space Station on 5 watts as it passes overhead.
