I tried at least 4 times but no coal. I'm thinking the bamboo I was using is to small for this to work. Anyone here try this and can give me some pointers?

Your right about the bamboo size. You need about one to one and a half inch diameter bamboo for that minimum. I am assuming your V notch was correct given how close you got.
It did not sound right though. It's got to be very dry for it to work. It sound like it wasn't dry enough.
