To start with we had a GREAT trip!
David arrived at my house on Wednesday before Thanksgiving about 1:00 PM. We made our "how was the trip?" stuff pretty short and began loading my Dodge 4X4 right away, both of us ready to hit the woods. A run to the market and the gun shop to pick up his license and we were off. One stop at the gas station to FILL the truck (he insisted on this since our last boat trip!) and we were headed North to the Deer Woods.
We made the time honored and superstitious stop at the Baskin Robbins for an ice cream cone to pay homage to the "Deer Gods" and were off the paved road and in 4 wheel drive in short order. We arrived just minutes before sunset so could only do a quick look see at where thywar would be hunting the next morning with my stand location nearby in the same patch of hardwoods. Then it was to the cabin to unload gear and get settled in our new digs for the next 5 days.
Our first night was spent with some great craft beer brought from Oklahoma and much catching up and some story telling along with countless comments and high hopes about the next days hunt, an exchange that would take place every night the duration of our outing. We mostly talked and laughed and snacked off and on although I did have to heat up a bowl of venison stew brought from home for supper.
The week and weekend were filled with great weather, although Friday was super windy and quite a ride with me way up in a pine tree in my climber stand. We enjoyed some great food with one night having battered and fried backstrap with fried potatoes and onions while another evening we enjoyed some venison steaks with baked potatoes and a baked buttered onion all cooked over and in the coals of a super campfire built by thywar.
Saturday I had moved my stand and bumped some Does on the way in which was promising but that would be the only deer I would see. I did have a Coyote come through which I uncharacteristically let walk since I really didn't want to mess with a dog that day nor did I want to run off any close by deer. A bit later another came by and that was just too much! They are just so hard on the Turkeys up there. My Winchester 30-30 did a great job with 170 grain placed between the eye and the ear there was not a lot of tracking skill involved with that shot.
Sunday I went back to the same stand location and had three deer come in about 10:30 they came right through never knowing I was anywhere around since I was up high in my climber stand and I was able to take a super Doe and a smaller one that later turned out to be a button buck. I really thought it was a smaller Doe but, oh well, it happens and it will be some great eating.
I gotta say, we had a fantastic trip all the way around. We had great weather, great food and super great company with much laughing, ribbing and story telling. Even though David didn't get to take a deer he claimed the trip a home run too. He got some great scenery, some great dirt time and was able to run some of his gear through it's paces. It jus don't get no better en that in my book! Here are some photos from the trip.
Our first night with some venison jerky and some wonderful Meer Beer thywar brought.
We improvised a simple cook counter since David brought a Coleman stove and even brought me a REAL coffee pot even though he doesn't drink the stuff! Now that's a hunting buddy there for sure!!!
The Coyote
The Happy Hunters!
Had reason to finish installing the skinnin pole! It worked great.
Thywar counting Whitetails in his dreams.
I have to say out of all the gear I brought Thywar was most impressed of all things with my salt and pepper shakers!! He shook his head, had a good laugh and said "how appropriate!"
