Went to the old shelter today, it was still there and in good shape. I didn't work on the shelter today but concentrated on making a pump drill in the field. It worked well and spun great but the problem I had was keeping the hearth board still. And the fact that the spindle broke didn't help any either. From what ive learned and sticking with my ideas very little needs to be done. Make the spindle thicker and the counter weights a little heaver. I also need to make the hearth board longer so I can put my foot on it. Let me know what you all think...OT

I think what you should ask Santa for is a new barrel for a reflector. LOL Looks like we may never need a fire the rest of our winter, it is supposed to be in the 70's this weekend. Sure will be hard to process deer if we get any. Glad you had a good day out tromp'in around.

The one I have at home looks much better. I was lucky to find that barrel in the woods,it makes a great heat relector

What if you dug a shallow trench for the board so it would not move. Make it a little wider were the coal would be. Glad you didn't find any surprises

Got ya. Pegs would be easier if it came down to needing help holding it.

Got ya. Pegs would be easier if it came down to needing help holding it. Never had that happen before,I should have used a bigger brick. Next time my hearth board will be longer thanks for posting

OT! I was so into your pump drill work, and so hopeful it was going to work, when I saw the spindle break, I shouted out a 4-letter expletive that was not appreciated by the women-folk within ear-shot! Darn! You're so close, I'm sure you'll nail it, soon.
Unrelated...I'm diggin' those chaps/leggings. Are they waterproof? Snakeproof? I'm wondering why you were wearing them. Care to share?

Sure,I do a lot of rabbit hunting and you know where rabbits like to live....in the thickest briers or thorn patch you can find. Plus all the sticky seeds that like to hitchhike on your pants. I remember years ago coming home from rabbit hunting stripping off the pants. Having to dig the briers out of my legs where they broke off. That don't happen anymore and the chaps help keep your pants clean and dry, snake proof not advertised as such. Ill do another field made pump drill, I know a little more now. Next time i hope to have a better ending ;D ....OT
