Got a bug about these lately wantin to know more about 'em. Compared to the 15, they initially seem to be heavier, more expensive, limited to 20rd mags, and less prevalent. The upside is that they shoot a 7.62 which has got more punch than my 5.56. If any of yall have experience with this platform feel free to chime in.

I haven't owned one yet, but a friend does so I get a chance to play. The 7.62/.308 round is long proven to excel in doing anything I want to do, and much more. I really, really like the Armalite AR10........ I recently had a Bushmaster version literally in my hands with the intent to purchase it, when I made a last minute snap decision to buy an AR15 in 5.56 which I've never been fond of. (I've pissed off a lot of folks by referring to their AR15's as .22's ) Ammo cost pushed me off the fence on the small caliber side. I'm on a drive to have "enough" on the shelf and I'm buying .223 at about 1/3 the cost of .308. Plus, all of my neighbors have AR15's and think that 40 full magazines is a good start for a newbie..... Bottom line for me: Yes, the AR10 platform is proven, very capable and reliable. The down side is portability of a large ammo supply if that is important to you. I am methodical in my gun purchases and I will own one next year - I'm just prioritizing right now ;D Marc

I also picked an AR15 for logistic reasons. My department allows them for patrol use. I get to bring the gun to work with me, get free training ammo and practice every year. That's huge. If that wasn't a factor, I would have gone with an AR10 as my primary SHTF weapon. The critical issue for me is that AR15s are hit or miss on barrier penetration. People tend to take cover in gun fights. Cars, trees, block walls, brick walls, etc, tend to stop 5.56 rounds. 7.62 literally turns cover into concealment. If you can identify where the gun fire is coming from, it doesn't matter what they are hiding behind, because with an AR10 you can probably shoot through it. It is also much more capable at longer ranges, which isn’t as much of an issue for me, but if I lived in Nevada or such, that would be a huge factor. Here are some videos on penetration power. If you watch them through, you’ll see the devastating power a 7.62 or 30-06 has, and the lackluster barrier penetration of the 5.56. I’ve personally seen 5.56 fail to completely penetrate all the way through a car (in one side and out the other to where a person may be taking cover). This is not an issue for the 7.62 (Russian or NATO). For those reasons, I believe the 7.62 would make a great primary SHTF weapon. youtu.be/dKhMOfaYwvEwww.liveleak.com/view?i=a7d_1240819390

I like the feel of the ar-10. It is larger and feels like a real rifle to a large guy like me, but I went with the 15. Yes it is a smaller caliber than I like but the wife can shoot it with no abuse of recoil, large supplies of ammo available at this time and cheaper to stock up for.

The're better than throwing rocks.
I think they are cool, but have the M14 instead. I've also had the FN/FAL and others.
If the choice is between a M4 or a AR-10, the M4 wins hands down every time in my book. If you already have a M4/M16, and want another AR rifle, yep, it's a good rifle and worthy of the $$$.
I like them all, and a whole lot of ammo.

I love my AR 15 for the most part and dont ever plan on not having one. The 10 would be that "special occasion" rifle if I ended up getting one. One thing that I would like is that Im more than familiar with the ergonomics having shot the M16 alot in the CG and having my own S&W mp15. With the distance capabilities of the 308, does that platform lend to accuracy at greater distances or is the M14 superior?

A 308 is a 308. All are Mortars past 600 yards. It doesn't matter what platform.
I wouldn't say the M14 is Superior, its just "Well Tested".
I like them, but I do believe the AR-10 is "Capable" of more accuracy.

Does the 10 require a longer barrel length? I know a longer bbl will likely increase range performance but, will the 16in bbl work well or is the 20" 'required' for good shooting in the 762? What about twist rates? With the heavier bullet, I would think a more severe twist rate 1:7? may be the norm. I guess I could ask the same of the M14 platform too. Thanks for the input ya'll

AR's are ok, but my go to would have to be HK-91 followed by FN-FAL for overall SHTF.
If it were a case of not wanting to shoot through the car, and the neighbors house, it would have to be the AR15.

I prefer the AR-15 platform....it has more interchangeable upper configurations than any other firearm. Everything from a .22 LR BCG to the newest 300 Blackout (7.62). I've got the AR-15 in .223 and I've got the .22LR BCG conversion. If I was dead set on shooting a 7.62 from an AR platform...the 300 Blackout would be my choice. I've got multiple 30-06's and other .30cal / 7.62 platforms and just don't see the need in the extensive expense of an AR-10 platform when I've already got .30cal / 7.62 based rifles that are dead on and perform as expected. Save your money, get an AR-15 lower and add a 7.62 based upper.

The AR10 platform really shines as a precision rifle. With 6mm and 6.5 chamberings it can give any bolt rifle a run for the money.
For a battle type rifle, the M14 wins. For a carbine, the FAL wins.
The .308 is a fine round but shoot a 5.56 at some steel and see how it compares to its larger brother.....
