I was wondering, and I think this has been discussed before but my memory has lapsed, if we were to have a strong emp, are we going to loose all communication ability? If someone does have a faraday cage for their electronics, what good are they really if electricity is down? I have walkie talkies and a really strong cb but how good will they really be, if any?

I may be wrong here...but I think if you invest in a portable solar power setup, or even the parts for a not so portable one, and put it in a faraday cage (if it is made right), then you would have at least some power for a communications system. Batteries can also be put in the cage for future use, and if you got rechargeable ones, and a solar charger, then you would have your batteries for flashlights, walkies and such. If HAM operators keep this in mind, and keep backup systems protected, then there will be a communications system nation wide and worldwide...albeit scattered and patchy, it would be there. This is why I got my Tech license and am studying for my General after the first of the year. I want to make sure I have access to some sort of communication, even if it is just listening in for news from the outside world.
I am wondering if a person has deep dry batteries for a solar power home set up, and the acid in bottles set aside, if after an EMP, could they then charge the batteries and would they work? Also, how long after an EMP should a person wait before breaking their stuff out? Is there a residual affect that could damage systems from an EMP and how could a person protect against residual damage?

Nothing would change for me, I'll just continue to wander around and mumble to myself.

Well even if everyone else did NOT have radios, you could still use yours. But you would have to think that there will be others out there with radios in faraday cages.
