I know most of you are going to say, 'well I know my property'. But have you LISTENED to your property? More accurately, listened to the surroundings of your property? A neighbor that cranks his car at 7:24 am every day, like clockwork. A train going by in the distance at half past the hour. Is it five minutes late today? A family of turkeys lazily making their way across the back of your property. A dog barking at 10 pm every night. Why is he barking at 11:30 tonight?
Sometimes its the normal things that give us the best clues. Familarize yourself with your surroundings. Granted, when TSHTF all those sounds will be different and you'll have to readjust. But who says you have to wait until then to protect yourself and to be more keenly aware?

That reminds me, I posted in detail on that subject on ST. I'll have to do so again here.

I honestly checked on my neighbor for that same reason. When he is in from offshore I usually hear him make noise, crank up his ATV, riding lawn mower, boat motor, his truck and of course his Harley or target practicing with his guns. Since I hadn't heard his noise on the day he was expected in I thought he might've been sick or something. Called his wife and told her I was concerned 'cause of this. It so happens his relief worker's wife had surgery so he was pulling his work shift too! He thought it was funny when his wife told him about his noise. It isn't constant or annoying, great neighbors, just missed not hearing that noise.

Do you remember how quiet it was after 9/11 when there was no aircraft flying?

Do you remember how quiet it was after 9/11 when there was no aircraft flying? I can relate to that one cause I worked for a law enforcement department near Miami International Airport. It was way too quiet and at the same time something didnt feel right.

If it is totally quite here, something is wrong. If I don't hear a dog, goat, chicken, or meat rabbit thumping in his cage......I would assume teotwawki has occured.

Our dead-end 7-house street has a ridiculous number of cars coming and going at night and in the morning. My own schedule is fairly regular during the school year, so once I'm gone, I've no idea who goes where or when. Nevertheless, the end house has 16 cars as well as a lot of guests. Perhaps it's time to begin taking down plate numbers. Our immediate neighbor always has a full driveway, never fewer than 6 vehicles, often 8 including a boat. For a dead-end street in "suburbia", it's pretty noisy, not just with cars, but with leaf-blowers (nobody here has ever heard of using a rake), lawn mowers (For our small yards, nobody uses a reel mower; another neighbor actually uses a riding mower!), screaming kids (next door, as well as at the illegal daycare on the corner), and air traffic. Yes, it was eerily quiet for a few days after 9/11, but the quiet lasted about as long as the uncommon courtesy given to fellow drivers. One neighbor has 2 dogs who bark at everything including their owners, for hours on end on their deck. Sirens from any of several nearby fire stations provide a regular accompaniment to the traffic noises on the main drag behind our house. Shouting teens and screaming kids wander through the park at all hours; it's a wonder the poor deer get any sleep. For us, it's only quiet during an ice or snow storm, and even then, the DOT vehicles make noise soon enough. Rarely have we heard branches and trees snapping from their ice burdens, but it happens.

Do you remember how quiet it was after 9/11 when there was no aircraft flying? A couple of days after 9/11 my husband and I were rocking on the back porch. Imagine our surprise when we DID see a small plane flying. We just looked at each other with puzzled looks on our faces, wondering what was up.
