Think I am going to try my hand at this freaking cold weather fishing. I am thinking that the road to the fishing hole is probqbly closed due to ice on a gravel road and steep grade. I will hike in the 3ish miles if it is in fact closed. It will give me some more winter hiking experience as well as a little exercise. Vacation seems to make me lazy. Any tips are appreciated. I am not expecting much if any success by I have a nice cigar to enjoy and a morning of nothi g else planned so why not.

While you're moving, you'll probably stay plenty warm. It's that sitting still for a period of time that will get to you. Knowing that, and wearing something both wind and waterproof, is a help, especially when paired with something to insulate you from a cold seat.

Thats the thing I am not really sure. I received a new pole and reel and an awesome tackle set from the exchange so I was just trying my luck. I ended up not making it but am planning on going again after I drop the kids at the day care. They don't like the several mile hike in.

OK, Ill give you what little I know on the subject. The best bet for winter fishing in the Awesome State of Missouri is the trout parks for catch and release fly season. Bennet is my favorite haunt for the winter. You will have the park nearly to yourself and there is alot of fish stocked. Be advised they are only open certain days too. There is no live or artificial bait allowed. Only "flies" so leave the corn and cheese mix at home. Missouri is liberal on its definition of a fly btw, ie) a single hook Mepps spinner with a tail is considered a fly. Anyway, they are active and the water temp is constant in the stream. But, to have a really good day of it, gotta learn to nymph fish. Trust me, its not as hard as some would have you believe. Crappies can be had in cold weather too. Usually late winter early spring. That my friend, this is a whole body of science unto itself. Im not talking about when the dogwoods are blooming and cane poles, I mean cold, targeted fishing. Next are the bass. They are mostly dormant and largely inactive this time of year. They can be caught however with the right techniqes. All I have ever been told about fishing in the cold is go slow, when you think you cant fish slower, slow down some more. This mostly refers to big lake fishing Lastly are the Blues. No, not the club who hasnt been to the Stanley Cup in 44 years ! The monster catfish that haunt the Missouri and Missippi rivers and feed heavily in cold water. Dont profess to be an expert on them, but take heavy tackle and be prepared for cold weather. Being the Coastie I am, I highly recommend at least a Mustang type V if not an immersion suit. Hypothermia death on the river unprotected sets in in maybe a few minutes. Anyway, Im usually out running dogs against wascaly wabbits this time of year and leave the fishies alone.
