I am looking to upgrade from my Gerber camp axe to either a solid hawk or something like the GB small forest axe but also a good felling axe. I do not have a ton of money to spend so need to know what to look for while doing yard sales and thrift shops. Any and all advice always appreciated.
In case you are wondering, the Gerber has been a good little tool and takes a super edge but when cutting bone it chipped a little and once got a small wave in it. Both were pretty easy to fix with a file and some time and it is once again sharp. I have been using the factory bevel but this last time I moved toward a convex edge. I have yet to make it actually shave as I have with the factory bevel. I also would like to have a slight curve to the bit rather than a straight edge. Can anyone profile it for more efficient cutting and easier sharpening or post a video on how to do it?
Here are a couple new tools I have been looking for and if you have never seen wranglerstar's videos on youtube check them out, the guy has some great stuff and I was inspired by his restoring a Collins American felling axe to get a more traditional tool of which I can make a handle from.
Should my Gerber ever break I will keep the head and use it for a wedge and hewing tool.
