I live in Arizona, so we worry about heat more than cold, but my sister is a Coloradan and she swears by silk layers underneath, says there's nothing like it for warmth with lightness and comfort.

That is what we are issued now. You can not wear them indoors. They are freaking hot. I believe it still to be true that UA is not authorized because along with burning they will melt to your skin in a blast or explosion. Supposedly polypro will not. I will take there word for it and not volunteer to try to disprove!

Never yet bought official under armour BUT I have much wicking and insulative garments. I get wicking tee shirts with my company logo embroidered on the chest for about $25 or I can get a similar shirt at the outdoor store locally for around the same. I also got a few different used surplus shirts online a couple years ago that are flame resistant if anyone is concerned about that, I think they were referred to as F.R.O.G. gear. I have a few friends that swear by merino wool, I haven't found any affordable options yet but I would like to try it out one day.

Keep an eye out on a few websites and you should find something at a good price. We got some merino base layering shirts last season for a really good price.

Just an update to the review for you guys.
After a week of single temps during the day and subzero temps at night with wind no less than 15 mph and gusts to 25 I have come to the conclusion that this stuff is still good to go, but for prolonged periods out side an additional underlayer is needed unless your being really active.
Now that being said, I don't handle the cold well. I'm of slender build and don't have the best circulation so I tend to get cold rather quickly

Under Armour is made in the USA as well. I like Carhartt, I had a pair of pants that lasted years beyond my levis. Problem with Carhartt is the same as with UA... $$$$ Gotta look for deals.

I like it fine. And, if you wait for the colder season to fade, all of the major stores that carry it will knock the price as much as 50%, you just have to get there early to find a selection of sizes.
I try not to buy anything "in season", even things like rods and reels and lures, whatever always takes a big price cut once the season is over.
