Growing up we always had cotton "long johns" and they worked OK for keeping us warm. Once I got into the service we were introduced to "Poly Pro" (polypropylene). Poly Pro was great stuff and I swear by it to this day, though it can tend to start to stink after a while.
Recently I started a couple new jobs. I am a survey tech for one, spending most of my days out in the woods skipping over swamps and wading through swale grass. The other job I have been doing is carpentry. Spending my days that I'm not surveying out on scaffolding and not moving around much. Here in Maine this time of year we might see temps in the single digits in the morning and mid 20s in the afternoon. At night its not out of the ordinary to see below zero. We very often see snow changing to rain, changing to ice, changing back to snow again in a given day. Its hardly ever not windy and here on the coast, even in the winter that wind is damp. Its hard to dress for success.
After freezing yesterday hammering nails I decided something needed to be done. The wool socks and shirts stacked upon shirts just weren't cutting it. Not only was I bulky but I was freezing my skinny little butt off too. My wife told me to check out TJ Max for some under armour. I have heard of Under Armour before but it was really expensive. I thought of it as more of a fashion statement than any thing, the tactical, high speed must have.
I poked around the racks sizing up this fancy spandex called Under Armour. I picked out a couple shirts and pants marked as ColdGear. They seemed exactly like the HeatGear with a different label. I dunno. I took them to dressing room and tried to shoe horn my self into them, it was no use. I decided to give it another shot and went one size bigger than I normally wear. At least I was able to get them on. Looking in the mirror I kind of chuckled. Dressed like a scrawny superhero with black tights I couldn't imagine how on earth this stuff could keep any one warm. I bought a set any way, they were half the MSRP so what the heck.
Upon getting home I put on the top and wore it around the house. To my surprise it was pretty warm, we are usually wearing sweaters in here. It was a little uncomfortable at first but once it slid into the right places and I got used to it I really liked it. I spent some time out side this afternoon, temps were in the low teens. I was really amazed at how much of a difference this single thin layer made. I think this along with a layer of poly pro would make an awesome combination for our single digits with wind chills.
I'm sold on Under Armour 100%. I am NOT sold on the price tag. Every thing I got today had nearly a $60.00 price tag per item. I would never spend that much on an undershirt, ever... That's insane money. At places like TJ Max though this stuff can be had cheap. I spent $20.00 for the tops, and $15.00 for the bottoms.
So in short Under Armour is GO! Try it on! Shop wisely.
