Here's a shelter I built for another forum's challenge. First time I've done a shelter like this one. I didn't use any tools. Branches were found and broken by hand. Roots dug up and split, and then weaved around the support poles. Some pine boughs were thatched into the top of the weaves. Added some more shaping boughs to the outside and covered with pine needles. The inside has boughs, weeds, pine needles, and ceder for an insulation bed. I don't expect it to keep me dry in a heavy rain, and I did NOT sleep in it. If I were to actually use it, I would have built it in the woods to have more of a wind break and overhead coverage. It was a fun experience.

Great shelter. Here in WI, you would be covered in TICKS!

Oh, don't get me wrong. We have lots of ticks, too! Smoking the inside of the shelter should remove a lot of the little biters. I'd be more worried about fire ants deciding to come build a nest under me!

Nice shelter buddy you did a great job. I believe my next shelter will be off the ground and away from as many creepy crawlers as possible.

That is a dang nice shelter. I only have one issue with the set up. Please correct me if I'm wrong but your fire pit has no apparent safe area raked around it.

I'm sure he is smart enough to keep an eye on this. But you are correct as pine needles go up like gasoline. For me that would make a great no fire shelter. Just no way I could sleep in that with a fire going. Still a good job on the shelter

Thanks guys. I built that as a real quick fire just for photo purposes. Lol. It's a couple of feet in front of the shelter and on a spot of earth and mud that used to be a fire ant bed and where I have had multiple fires before. In fact, the stick between the fire and shelter was also covered in mud but you can't see it. I wasn't going to let it go anywhere. We haven't had a challenge on signaling by smoke signals yet.
