I use them for preps mainly food. My thought is in a SHTF senario if a bug out becomes neccessary will I have time to box up all the food in the pantry. So I started building a food storage system using the cat big plastic square buckets with handles. I label them with the contents and stack on top of each other.

We have used them ever since litter was available in them. Right now they're used mostly to keep items dry in our eternally wet and leaking basement because they're tall enough to deal with the usual flooding levels. Hurricane level floods are another matter entirely, but there'd be other priorities if we expected that much rain/flooding.

Could be used for a "mini" cache and buried short term and fairly shallow.
