Went up to get my eggs a couple days ago. I opened the door to reach in and there's a pretty good size black snake fixing to dine on em. Now I know why I'm not getting eggs most of the time. Well killed it turned out to be about 5 ft long. Then yesterday I found another one a little over 4 ft and killed it to. I've never killed them before but now I'm on the hunt.

I just killed a snake in our chicken yard this morning. This heat is bringing them out. Keep an eye on your baby chicks in particular.

Generally, black snakes can be found in groups of 3. A female, who will reach up to and even over 6' long...and 2 males which usually don't get over 4' long.
The worst thing about killing black snakes...they kill and eat poisonous snakes. But then, catching and relocating them is not an option...they WILL come back to your nest boxes. Word of caution...I have killed off a trio before out of the chickenhouse and the 4th snake I found was a rattler in the nest box...BE CAREFUL!!

Are snakes active at night? Snakes can be active both day and night except during the winter months when they hibernate. However, as the hot months approach they do tend to be more active at night. The cooler night temps help them maintain a steadier body temp or health problems will arise.
