Thought I'd share a short term test I been attempting the last two months.
I have always liked caches and really never had a problem with them. I have always used PVC and glued end caps. I never like the screw on caps, too many extra spots to leak. But as you know getting into the tubes can be a PITA.
Well I have tried silicone, regular chalking, plumber’s putty, gasket type silicone. Some worked but were still a pain to open and some did not work (leaked).
Well as I said this has been a short term test, but it has been a good "wet" one. We have the wettest winter on record in S MS.
Don't laugh when I tell you what I'm trying. Vaseline, plain old Vaseline. Its temperature properties are a melting point of about 93-96 degrees F. Melting may be an issue some places, but not here. Temps at 2-3 feet underground here range from 67 in the summer to 74 in the winter.
I used a liberal amount of it to seal the tube on one end, along with 3 wraps of the water resistant version of duct tape. The other end is glued. I used 4" sch 40 PVC 4’ long. I put 3 old files wrapped in some tissue paper, as test pieces. Knowing tissue dissolves in the smallest amount of moisture and a file will rust if you look at it wrong...lol. After 2 months underground I dug it up. The cap with Vaseline on it came off very easily. The contents were in the same condition I left them in when I put it in the ground.
At this point I'm impressed with the results. I just reburied it after cleaning up the ends and sealing it the same way. I will leave in it in the ground through the summer and see how it comes out.
Hoping for the best.
Jimmy
