Lightsticks are a very handy source of emergency light. They're waterproof, do not use batteries and can be a lifesaver if you become lost for rescuers to find you. They should be part of everyone's home or auto emergency kits.
If camping with children the small bracelet ones can provide comfort to them in the darkness. Placing the bracelet types around tent pegs shows their location thus avoiding anyone tripping on them and becoming injured.
After an earthquake many gaslines rupture. Maneuvering in the dark with lightsticks is the safest way not to cause an explosion. There's no open flame such as using matches, no possibly of creating a spark such as using a flashlight.
If lost in the woods and rescue teams are still searching after dark, they can easily be spotted overhead by pilots. Simply tie a string to it and make large swinging circular motions to be more easily seen.

We carry one in most all of my BOB or hunting Packs.
A good, lightweight, multi-use accessory.

They are usually good way past their expiration dates as well. I had one I opened that had expired ~3 years earlier, cracked it, lit right up and was still mildly bright the next morning.

Next time you go scuba diving take one down with you and cut it open. The glow stuff comes out in all kinds of wild shapes and the fish go absolutely nuts over it!

Dollar stores like Dollar Tree are a really good source of these, especially before Halloween.

Dollar stores like Dollar Tree are a really good source of these, especially before Halloween. If you look in the kid's section, you can usually find them year round. I recently bought a LARGE pack, for the grands, that they can make into bracelets, headbands, etc. They're made by Crayola and were disappearing fast. They also have the regular light sticks too...at least as long as the inventory last!

Great info and definitely a must have item. CCM thanks for the heads up on DT having these. I guess I'll have to shop at DT more often.

Yes I agree they are great for camping. Many uses and children have a blast playing with them.
They are not quite as good in a survival situation because you cannot cut them off. However if you have an airtight and watertight container to put it in then they aork. Another idea in a survival situation is to have spmeone that is good at stealth to sneak out put a cople around to keep the enemy busy while you take care of everything like maybe leaving or what have you.

DT, Walmart in camping section year round and I also bought some bracelet ones, fifteen to a container for $1 at Michael's craft store. And if all else fails they can all be found online.
