Laminating items of importance will protect them better than simply placing them in ziplocs. If you don't have access to a laminating machine there are alternatives. Places such as Wallyworld and office supply stores sell full sheet sized packets which can also be cut to size for smaller items. Another alternative is rolls of clear contact paper. For peace of mind, laminate it.
Items to consider are:
photos
personal info on individuals in your family or group such as names, blood type, medications being taken, allergies, etc. so info is available during emergencies without forgetting some details or just don't know if not familiar with the person
important documents such as house deeds or ins. policy info etc.
fishing license
maps with heavy usage
lists of cached items placed on top of items in buckets
list of important emergency contacts such as names, phone numbers, e-mails, addresses
directions for purifying or desalinating water
pics and info to identify area plants and their purposes
sewing patterns to make them more permanent

Laminating your social security card is a no no. Had a friend that recently went to apply for a job and they wouldnt accept his laminated social security card because it was laminated. He had to go get a new card if he wanted to be considered for the job. I personally think that's a load of bs.

Wonder if they sent him to DMV to get an unlaminated license which they copy for an ID.

I know....that is so rediculous....he was telling me that they asked him for his passport or birth cert. to proof that he is a U.S. citizen and able to work in the U.S even though he gave them the ss card and drivers license. He did bring up a good point...he was wondering why so much documentation was required to get a job but when you go vote for an election they dont require such documentation. Another great example of our country been a$$ backwards.

It's just a small thin form that the chief of police fills out and signs. When folded it looks like a receipt so I did it so I wouldn't end up throwing it away in addition to keeping it from getting all torn and crinkled.

We use to use contact paper all the time in the Army for our maps..worked great. I believe laminating maps is very important. Too many foldings and some of the info can't be read or the print slowly disappears. If it's raining you can still whip out the map not worrying about it getting wet. Again, a big plus to protect maps.
