Yesterday we took the second round of home defense training with the sim guns. I've been really tired and somewhat brain dead for a couple of weeks so I was kind of worried about how this one would turn out since I'm not on my A game.
I did really well in the first class but man I did lousy in this one.
The first class had very clear cut situations where the worst you could do was shoot someone who didn't deserve it. This class had more complex situations with more interactive people and a hostage situation.
In one scenario you wake up and someone is in your home robbing you. They put their gun down and you are trying to talk them into just leaving. Then another person with a gun appears in a corner of the room, points it at you and just stands there. The other guy is still takling to you. I saw the threat but didn't know what to do with it. I guess I was waiting for them to say or do something but I just got shot. I didn't even move for cover or issue a command.
I got shot again in another scenario without taking cover or leaving. It was a party scenario so there were a lot of people and it went from a verbal argument to my friend being shot in about 5 seconds.
In the hostage scenario my hostage died.
I did well in 2 out of 5 scenarios. Not a good day at the sim range.
I did identify some problems I can work on. One was that I have never drawn from a holster before. I wasn't wearing a belt so the holster was just in the strap of the protective gear and when I'd try to draw the gun the holster was coming with it.
I got disarmed once and part of the is I generally practice in isoceles stance and I just automatically go to that. I mostly can't believe I wasn't moving around more and taking cover. I did really well with that last time. Maybe I'm not a good multitasker?? I realize I'm new to shooting but you'd at least think I wouldn't just stand there and get shot!
DH said some of the scenarios needed tweaking, and they were doing that as we went along and made a few adjustments before the next person went through it. We were the first people through this class. And, we were the only 2 out of 7 who showed up. So it was like we had our own team of personal instructors.
But there was a perk. Insaneh was in the general area so I tracked him down and had a few minutes to say Hi. It's always nice to see your online pals in person!
