I finally found a good use for those dollar store magnesium fire starters you couldn't shave with a chainsaw. Put them in a vice, drill 1/8" holes in as many places as you can. Pickup and save the drill waste, and throw the rest away. Actually don't throw it away and when you have some fire but you really need a bigger one quick, use that full of holes mag brick in it.

I find these cheapie bars respond well to friction from some of our local rocks. As long as I can collect the shavings -- no, how about "abradings" -- I can have an easy fire.

i had one that was that bad i had to hack bits off, i think they sold me a bar of tungsten not magnesium, i still have it kicking about in the bottom of a junk draw somewhere, i should see if it has softened with age, or maybe its just me that has
