Great information guys. Would one of you be willing to do a thread on Painting 101 covering what can be done with spray cans to air sprayers and how we can keep some of our metal treasures fit for duty and looking good? Maybe cover some surface preps and simple do's and donts? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I betcha that was a dandy for sure, nothing like blocking one out between color and clear. Like you say though you have to patient and devoted because it takes an insane amount of time. One of these days I am going to get around to figuring out how to scan photos into this thing and then I could show some of my previous work. I mostly did higher end stuff at my shop if at all possible, I turned out some really nice show stuff and lots of exotics, E-type jags, Pantera, Lotus, Porsche and as you already know lots and lots of race cars......and yeah that was long before the days of vinyl wraps!

If some one else jumps on it before me, that's fine too.

I would too but gosh, I've been doing it for bumping real close to 30 years now and I still haven't gotten it figured out! I've turned out some eye-poppin paint work but I'm still lookin for that elusive one that's "PERFECT"!

You the painter, slinger of slop, master of dust, prince of puddy will always see every single blemish and mistake. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If the customer says its perfect, than so be it, perfect it is.

If you were to buy a new one the MODEL 870™ EXPRESS® TACTICAL comes already duracoated. I got very lucky last year on a couple of gun buys.
My Son n Law works at a large mom and pop owned gun store. The store takes in trades, does the maintenance work for Glock, Remington, and Browning, supplies upgrades to police, highway patrols and even some military. The owner also buys estates and truckloads of guns + they are ATF full auto sales and repair.
Three good things happened for me in the last year. The store resupplied the police departments in IL and KY with glock 40 and took in their Barettas and some 357 revolvers.
First I picked up a quantity of FS Barettas with only holster rubs and dropped magazines, for 1/2 retail. Then I picked up a trio of 357 revolvers for less than $200 each.
The second piece of luck was on the Remington 870. Several came in damaged needing repair, the shop just sent them new guns repaired the old ones and sold them to me for what the repair cost was.
My Son n Law paints duracoat and camp paints that are cured in a low heat oven. Then a great deal came in when a police department ordered the wrong finish for their shoguns. They ordered 12 870 express tactical pump guns, but they wanted was the 870 tactical marine finish, all ss parts. He reordered for them and was going to eat the 870's I was able to pick up 6 of the 12 a $325.00 each,
My other steal for the year was on AR15's. He made a deal to take all a law group had as down payment on H&K's . He was already stocked with AR-15 so he sold the 15's for $600 each. Most were Colts some were DMS or wylde, so I got 5 of them and he coated them for me as practice runs.
good to have someone in his position

I used engine paint on a firearm awhile ago. It's flat black and has held up good. If I remember right some of the British firearms were painted. The SMLE and STEN come to mind.
