OK, this is a little rough, especially at the end when I won't stop shaking the D*** things. But something to look out for in the woods.

These spots can be found spring right into the middle of summer where I'm at. As I think I mentioned, they don't have a lot of flavor but will smell nice if placed in a jar with rice (also the best way to store them). Often the only ones left behind are not quite ripe yet and therefore not quite aromatic enough to get the critter's attention. Sometimes it will improve them by keeping them in the frig a few days until the smell is stronger. Don't tell anyone this......but sometimes if I'm having company over and using native truffles, I'll add a bit of white or black truffle oil to the dish just to make sure they can actually taste truffle. Lol. If anyone has experience with these I would love to hear about it. I have had them raw, cooked and every which way but just can't make them a stronger flavor ps. these spots were everywhere out there. It took a couple takes to find the truffles though

I've never seen it before either.. and at first I thought they had already been eaten by the deer cause I thought you were holding deer pellets.. I had never noticed them before either until I was walking with some folks who's dog smelled them and started scratching away. Now I see them all the time. Something I failed to mention was that they are never in the "dirt." Always in the duffy compost area on top of the actual soil. Lol... "deer pellets......" I was up on the Appalachian trail when digging these guys. This old time hiker comes walking through wondering what I was up to. I showed him the truffles, told him what they were, and before I could explain they were not washed he had gobbled one down whole. "How was that?" I asked. "Kinda tastes like soil." The guy says........ Well no kidding dude.....and who just eats something some random stranger in the woods hands him? Darn good thing they weren't deer pellets!!
