Seems like my part of Texas now has easy 3,000 yard views since the fire :-)
I've been shooting with some folks who work at w a y long ranges, and I can feel an itch that I can't scratch......... but the more I work with them, the more I learn that there is a whole heck of a lot more to it than I realized - so I'll just keep itching.
Nice rig Mike!

Nice rig Mike! I'm into that set up for under 1500 bucks. Bought all the parts and put it together, did the bedding at my kitchen table. The reloading stuff I got for both the .308 and 5.56. I think you could have very satisfying results using match grade ammo and forgo the reloading. I learned a lot about ballistics, shooting, and building an accurate reliable firearm in the process. If I could change any thing with the set up it would be a better stock and nicer scope. That Hogue over molded stock is just too flexible, but its working for now. I would love to suppress it, but that's another 1500 bucks. I could easily have 5,000 in this if it wasn't for my self control haha.

The only thing I am keeping my .308 for is to shoot the heads off of zombies at 800 yards. I can shoot man sized targets at 500 yards with an AR and 300 yards with a AK. I am sure there are some who could do better with the AR and AK but if I want to really reach out an touch someone while they are still too far off to see me, it is the .308. Most "sniper" rifles are semi-auto, but I prefer the bolt action 26" bull barrel, but thats just me. There is some truth to losing your sight alignment with a bolt action, my thing is almost every one I know using a semi-auto shoots fast and wastes shots. It's why my step-father started me out with a single shot .22, actually a .22 over .410 single shot. If I had five shells I was expected to have five squirrels or rabbits.
I like your .308 but if you can hit far enough out to satisfy your needs with something else then sell it. I have killed mule deer and elk with a .243 because I was confident I could hit necks or heads with it, not as far as some people want to shoot maybe, but I hunted them with a bow so getting with in 300 yards for the .243 was easy compared to getting within 40 yards with a bow.
The last few years I have been minimizing and standardizing much more than I would have been comfortable with 10 years ago. Its all in what you want/need. If it doesn't fit your game plan sell it, it is ok for your game plan to change to match new situations.
One final note. The .308 would not be something I would try and carry, it is a cache gun at the main retreat. I only shoot it there on the shooting lanes and pinch points there, so I have proven pie pan hits recorded at each area I want to take a shot out to 800 yards, all I have to mind is the wind from any number of hide holes.

Your not carrying this any where, it weighs 14 pounds. Its a pain to fire unsupported.

Prior to bedding the action it shot 3/8 to 1/2 MOA groups (off the bipod), so bedding didn't gain it much in the short game. These come on pillars and semi free floating from the factory, right out of the box its a really good gun with the exception of the stock. When I put forward pressure on the bipod it flexes the whole foregrip. Though the flexible grip is great for leveling the gun and putting forward pressure on things I know its not going to hold up over time and some thing more stable would take a lot of work out of shooting. Wish list? I would love to do Manners, McMillan or Bell and Carson composite stock with a detachable magazine. A better scope would be nice too. This Konus holds its own but eye relief can be tricky on 16 power. So when you toss in the stock, detachable mag and a scope your well into another 1500 to 2000 bucks. I just added every thing up and I'm into this for about $1,664.00. That dosnt include reloading stuff, ballistics charts and aps or the marine tech for the bedding, just what you see in the picture. 750.00 Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 25.00 Burris scope rings 150.00 Badger 30 MOA scope rail 310.00 Konus 4.5-16x40 M40 scope 59.00 Turner Saddlery sling 100.00 Harris Bipod 35.00 Eagal industrys stock pouch 15.00 Sling swivels 20.00 Buttler creek caps (flip up front, push button rear) 200.00 Drag bag/shooting mat

I don't think this project was a "mistake".....just one that "needed to be done"....LOL May everyone of you have the vision and opportunity to be able to do it one day. Mine was years ago....was offered a Mauser '98 custom.....by a guy who's friend died, and was selling it for DW...he knew I was a shooter. Was chambered in .225 Winchester (yeah, kinda an odd ball). Bought it, for $15 bucks....and found ammo hard to find....and thought I got taken....LOL (problem was solved a long time ago) Anyway it had a custom stock (wonderful wood, poorly finished), an Obermeyer custom barrel obermeyerbarrels.com/ and had been set up for silhouette shooting with a peep sight. I had it all redone, safety modified, barrel glass bedded, and refinished, with front site removed, drilled and tapped for scope, bolt handle modified, trigger guard and floor plat engraved....and stock completely refinished. Was at the gunsmith for over a year, I would stop in and "visit" and give him a payment...at the time I really had no business spending that kind of bucks on a "mistake".... Everyone should do it at least once.

Mike that is a fine ride there. It's never a mistake. You have an excellent weapon there and keeping the zombies at bay is always a reason to have such a fine rifle. I did a Howa 1500 the same way. 20" HB. Silky smooth action and trigger from the factory. 4x16x50 Nikon, Harris bipod, Pelican case. I had just a touch under $1200 in it. I got to do some shooting with it. But not much. Never did load for it. It was a beauty with basic 165 BTHP Hornady loads. MOA at 100 yds. Gallon milk jugs at 400. Never got to try beyond 400, no place around here that I could.... It was fun, but a buddy of mine bugged me for over a year....he says he can't shoot as good as it does... Gotta say for 3-5 shots my new Savage in '06 with the 4x12x40 Nikon is not a slacker. 150 plain Jane Winchesters will MOA at 100 yards. I was flabbergasted. $14.89 a box. I punched 2 milk jugs at the same 400 without much trouble. The barrel does heat up quickly though. It's just at 7lbs 14ozs. At this point I got a touch over $530 in it. It ain't no M40 but I bet I can keep someone's head down at 600-800 all day..... One day I'll tell you how I paid for the whole shooting match (Savage) Enjoy that bad boy every time you get a chance!!! Jimmy

Trust me, Some day you will be glad you kept it. If you sell it, you will be upset with yourself some day down the road.
Been there.
KEEP IT!
