We have all done it at some point, built or bought some thing we really wanted but didn't need in the least. Such is the case with my .308. It is a well thought out project that I put together 5 years ago. Lots of research went into the platform as well as money. Not only did I build the rifle up but I also spent a bunch of coin on reloading equipment in order to hand load rounds for it. I feel bad, the gun sits around in the closet as it has no practical use. Its sole purpose in this world is to put boat tail hollow points on paper at 600+ yards. Its too heavy to hunt with, not legal for match or competition shooting, completely impractical for home defense. I feel like the money put into this could have been used for so many other things. Camping gear, an ACOG for my AR, or a flat top full length 5.56 upper for tack driving. It could have been an M1-A or M1 Garand or prepped food even.
The rifle is sub 1/2 MOA, actually from the bipod it shoots 1/4" groups at 100 yards. It will put round after round on to a 6" x 12" target at 675 yards (the furthest its ever been shot). The short barrel would lend it self well to a suppressor and its very enjoyable to shoot.
The gun started life as a Remington 700 SPS Tactical chambered in .308. The foregrip has been stiffened and the action bedded in marine tech for a true free floating barrel all the way to the pillars. Its got a Konus 4.5 - 16 power fully adjustable scope with focus ring and mildot cross hairs mounted on a 30 MOA rail. The stock pouch doubles as a raised cheek rest. Everything is supported by a Harris bi pod. The sling is a Turner Saddlery national match biothane sling. Every thing gets lugged around in a drag bag / shooting mat with all the ballistics data needed for wind and yardage. Ammo is reloaded brass firing Sierra match king 168 Grain hollow point boat tails.
I really wish this thing had a purpose. I have been debating for about a year now whether to sell it or not. Its SOOOO much fun, but so pointless
