This is a request for help not request for ridicule! I already know what I did wrong. Probably crash or one of the other knife specialists can give me advice. Couple weeks or so ago I went camping and was splitting small limbs with my RTAKII using another limb. Well, I got the knife stuck on a knot, broke my hammering limb and can you imagine what happened next? Yes I did! I got my camp hatchet and you know the rest of the story. (I got it unstuck.) Anyhow I need some advice on how to fix the boo boo on the back of the blade and what to cover the shiny metal up with. I guess I could grind it lightly or use a file and prime/spray it with dull black paint, but wanted to ask the pros. My two cameras are in my camper so I can't take a pic, but where I hit the back of the blade there is a tiny chink that is pushed out to the side (maybe 1/16th inch long) and the finish is gone in that spot. Suggestions please Jim

If the knife still performs its normal function then I would say you've just given it character (and I'd make up some wild azz story... It was a dark and stormy night.. lightning everywhere and we were huddled under the carport when lightning struck. If it hadn't been for my 'lightning fast reaction' putting the knife above my daughter's head just in the nick of time.. well it wouldn't have been pretty.. And that is how my favorite knife got that tiny chink... and that was the only thing that kept my child from being electrocuted.. and that's how that happened)

Every scratch in my hunting guns is a memory. Every tear and fray in my Filson's is another day well spent afield. The black on my camp coffe pot is a symbol of warm java around the fire. Ever blood stain on my game vest is evidence of success running bunnies with my friend's dogs. Beauty in field gear IS the cosmetic imperfections. Enjoy that little nick my friend, its evidence of a good day!

Thank you both. I don't feel so bad now. Jim

the back of my cold steel srk has all sorts of lumps and dings, it just adds to the character of a well used knife

You can fix it and apply paint if you want, but if you leave it alone it will just look like a user. If the ding on the spine has any sharp edges you can gently file those away so that you don't cut something that you don't intend to cut.

Thank you sir, it does have a tiny sharp edge and think I will gently file it away and then leave it as is. Don't want to pretty it up just keep it from rusting. Jim

I tend to agree with the others. Every mark on my stuff is a memory to be recounted around the campfire. Good or bad it was still a learning experience everyone can benmifit from
