It's for sure a bayonet. You might try checking sites that deal with military bayonets. I'm sure they can identify the country of origin and time line. Maybe someone else here can also help. Good luck!

Is that the orginal but cap? There is no locking mechanism.

Bayonet blade and guard,, But the stacked leather handle and lack of a locking piece on the guard or in the handle has got me confused. I was going to guess an M-3 trench knife but that bayonet gross guard still got me confused.

the lock mechanism not being there made me wonder also, so it is probally a modified bayonet. woods custom asked about markings, but there does not seem to be any stamping on it . thank you all for your time and help.
