This is one of the items in my fire kit. It's a strike anywhere match rolled on a paper towel that has petroleum jelly, and then dipped in wax. It gives a big flame and personally think is another tool/option to have. I did a burn test under windy conditions, and found it works great. The burn time took 12 minutes before it died out. Lightly spread some petroleum jelly on a paper towel that has been pre-cut to cover the length of the stick. Then roll the match with the paper towel. This is what it looks like once rolled This is after it has been dipped in wax. Note, I dipped it in wax 3 times to add more wax to the match Here it is burning

Wow orly that is really neat and with that amount of time in rainy conditions you'd have larger tinder burning in no time. Great job and thank you for sharing.

Thanks sweetcajun, I decided to do a little experiment after watching the guy roll the matches on paper towels. I wondered if it was pausible to spread pj on it before dipping it in wax....and the answer was yes. I also found out that the flames were bigger with the pj than without.

That's a pretty good burn time. Steroids is correct. That would be one of those matches one holds back for really bad weather or very wet tinder. So is that a kitchen match? strike anywhere? one ply or two ply paper towel? and is that generic or Vaseline petroleum jelly? Did you roll the match left to right or right to left as that would effect the burn time depending on whether you're left or right handed I reckon? Was your burn time actually 'in the wind' or indoors while it was windy outside?
lol... I do think that is a great 'match' to have on hand in wet conditions. Thanks.

Might try heated up pj soaked in as well. (good thing there is no one around here by the moniker 'pj')

In fact it was his thread I bumped up and posted on in regards to Altoid Tin Kits. But he hasn't been around since December of last year so I believe you're safe.

Call it a "catch": it's a candle-match.
