...tell me...if I’m the only person out there like this… If I'm down on the ground, floor or whatever it's getting increasingly hard to get up. Of course a deep vein thrombosis in my left thigh from my surgery in ’10 left that leg a bit “lazy”. At my tender age... ...the one thing I have noticed more and more is my ability to get up is not what it needs to be… Well yesterday I started doing a getting up exercise. I just simply lie down on my back, then start my timer, and work hard at getting up to a standing position, timing myself. I did it just 10 times and cut my times by about 4%. I thought that was pretty good. Well today I did 10 again…cut about 5% off this time. That is a 9% reduction in time to get up off the floor, in just two days. I’m going to cut it back to every other day now though, as I do “feel” it. Which is not bad, but it makes no sense in wrecking a good start…lol Just think it will make things work better in a difficult situation. Try it you might be surprised…just think about it… Jimmy

Don't see anything crazy about it, though you may wish to incorporate some stretching exercise before hand.

Or try not drinking before hand.

I can honestly say my agility is still there for my ripe young age even to the extent of becoming a contortionist at times. Now having said that, if I've been sitting on the floor or squatting for quite some time while doing something, then it may take me a little time to get myself up but I consider that normal. Maybe those seventeen steps I climb up and down a few times a day to get up to my porches have some extra value after all.

Can we hear more about the contortionist part Climbing steps is good as long as your knees are in good shape.

It's good you are getting those muscles working again, as kids we were on the floor all the time and standing was easy. But as adults we hardly use those muscles.

My problem in getting up, primarily from a squatting position, is that if I get up too fast I get dizzy and light headed. Therefore I always get up slow purposefully. But for those not afflicted like me your idea is great and keep at it. Any exercise is better than nothing.

Although it's been a few years since I've ridden on a Mardi Gras float that is where it occurred most. When you're assigned a 4x4 area to stand in, your legs are surrounded by large sacks of beads, boxed items and large plastic bags piled high. Dropping a special throw means bending in whatever way to retrieve it in time to hand to the person it was meant for. If nature calls, to get to the potty, you climb over your goodies, the next two neighbors over with their goodies, and finally get to the location. Oh yeah, my container of JD is placed back somewhere so it doesn't get accidently dropped over so that's another reason to do some more twisting around whenever my throat gets dry. In my home it may be squeezing between the wall and a heavy piece of furniture to retrieve an item which fell behind it, or reaching around for a needed tool without letting go of what I'm working on.

my biggest problem is standing back up from bending at the waist, i have purposly made my workshop benches higher so i dont have to bend as far, it is like hot knives into the muscles if i try to stand too quickly (this comes from a bike accident that caused compression fractures of 4 verterbre) so i definately feel ya my friend, goodness knows what i will be like in 20 years when i hit my 60's

My knees don't like doing what they once did. I can still bend at the waist and very nearly put my elbows (yes!) on the floor while maintaining straight legs, but kneeling is out unless I'm sitting between my heels. Getting up from that position is considerably slower than it used to be.

Well I don't bend over or squat, not if I want to get back up. Get plenty of looks when I sit down in a store aisle so I can see/get to an item below my waist. Getting up from sitting on the floor is hard enough. My sciatic nerve is pinched and I have 3 vertebrae in my lower back and 2 in my neck damaged from the abuses I gave my body when I was young and bullet proof. Plus I have ungodly muscle spasms in my right lower back from the time before last I fell and crushed the two bottom ribs on that side, it feels like a knife stabbing me. (just a side note, I have been stabbed in the lower stomach and contrary to the statement above it did not hurt when it happened, in fact I was sure the guy had missed and it was his blood on both of us. However that was an in and out stab 5" , a slash to my rib cage was like being sit on fire I get the lazy leg too. My last stroke left both my right leg and hand a little slow. Right handed and no felling in the bottom and two lower fingers of my right hand, throws my shootin off too dad blast it. The strokes have given me much more problems than being shot four times (2 AK & 2 shotgun) and stabbed/cut once each. My advice is don't get old, it sucks.

It's good you are getting those muscles working again, as kids we were on the floor all the time and standing was easy. But as adults we hardly use those muscles. Nearly 60. The killer is 4 years ago I was still climbing up to and including 60' poles, working out of a bucket truck and working plenty of 60 hour workweeks. Life can change quickly. But I'm happy to say that just a few evening of this has made a decent improvement over just a few days ago. I actually trying my hooks out yesterday on my new security light pole. I set a 30ft pole yesterday and climbed it and installed a 40lb 150 watt flood. Took a bit as the old one lunger had to be dealt with, but overall good work...plus it wasn't a green pole A good old creosote one, in new condition. No doubt Woodyz, getting old sucks.... All I can say is don't get complacent with keeping some "looseness" in the old body....Not saying to become a workout nut, I'm not, but just figure out what it takes to stay loose and be able to do those basic things we may all need to do at some point. Thanks for all the responses folks! Jimmy
