Well spent more money on firearms today. I have been looking at a combo gun .22 / .410 for some time now and focused in on Savage model 42 prices are all over the place, Walmart had it today for $367.00 I've seen them between $389.00 - $429.00 so bought it. Looking forward to going small game hunting soon, anyone have any experience with this model. heres a link as well. www.gunsandammo.com/reviews/savage-model-42-review/

I was raised with the previous but very same model. My Brother and I got one each when we were 12. We used them for almost everything including tree rats/rabbits/quail/ducks/pheasants clear up until I went into the Marine Corps. Being single shot set ups made us take the time to be sure we would hit the target and made us better shooters in my opinion.
I love them as a first gun or just a good combo gun. I bought the 20 ga. under .22 version and use a .410 insert. They are great for small game as you can use the .22 if setting and switch to the shotgun if moving.
I intended to give it to my Grandson on his 12th BD but ended up giving him a Rossi set with .22/20/243 with a .410 insert, he will still get the 22/20 when I pass on.

I have a mod-24 that was passed on to me 45 years ago and it was well broken in at that time. still use it today. The barrels were welded together then. It should last you a long time.

I like those inserts, I have inserts for my 16 and 12 ga. single shots to covert them to .410 and .22 in a SHTF scenario it will be a great option to have.

How do those inserts pattern?

How do those inserts pattern? Depends on the distance to the target, and also what original gauge your inserting from, still tight enough to kill game or use for protection.

I have one myself, Love it for coyote hunting in the woods. It's a 223/12Ga. Works good if they come in close, and PLENTY accurate enough for 250 yard shots.
Great rifle, or is it a shotgun?

Well my new combo lost its virginity this morning, went squirrel hunting and nailed a nice grey currently resting in my freezer. Trying to hook up with the grandson for another hunt tomorrow. On a side note I had a couple cosmectic problems with the gun when I bought it, I contacted Savage and I recd. my parts today, they get a "atta boy".

You know I found a Savage insert 410 for a 20 ga, even has the extractor in it......never tried it yet...... Guess I have to try it out....got a 1/2 full shopping bag with 410 shells in it from a LEO that knows I shoot....hummmm.
