Thanks for the link.....what a great article.
A few months ago I saved an eyedrop container, thoroughly washed/cleaned it, and replaced the fluid with bleach. Easy to carry in a bob or even camping. I dated the outside of the bottle with a Sharpie, and replace the bleach every three months. I'm sure the top will eventually become sloppy loose and no longer be perfect, but hey.....they are cheap to replace !!

The mixture given on the "Grand Pappy site is confusing an requires dry measure devices. I have an easier way the may help. Use a piece of 1/2 CPVC capped at both ends to carry the powdered pool shock. The 1/2 " CPVC cap will hold 1/8 oz of dry pool shock. Adjust the length of the container to fit what you will carry it in.
Depending on where you live the pool shock or Calcium Hypochlorite granules may come in slightly different % and I have seen people question 54% to 68% anything. FOR THIS PURPOSE THE DELUSION USED WILL WORK USING ANY WHERE FORM 50 TO 70%.
Collect a gallon of the untreated water you want to drink. Add 8 cap fulls of the pool shock granules to the gallon. DO NOT DRINK FROM THIS GALLON THIS IS YOUR MIX SOLUTION. Let in sit 30 minutes.
Add 8 CPVC cap fulls of the liquid mix solution to 1 gallon/128 oz of untreated water you will drink. 4 caps for 64oz, 2 caps to 32oz, 1 cap to 16oz.
If it smells or tastes a little like bleach carry and add a small amount of kool-aid or other drink mix to it.
The gallon of mix solution will be good for 1 week, it can just be poured out anywhere.

That is a very good article CGU, but like offtrail I prefer to boil water whenever possible or filter the water with a purifier filter if hiking. At home I have an UV system to eliminate the chance of bacteria at anytime from the well water. At the campground I use my Sawyer .02 micron water purifier for drinking and cooking, I also have an electric distiller which can purify most any water including brackish or salt water if necessary.

That's good info CGU. I think that is important to have several ways on purifying water. It's always good to have a back up for the back up...Yes, some of the filters can be expensive but It's better safe than to be sorry. How many of us pass on purchasing an item because you thought it was expensive ? Then later you are hating life because you wished you had spent the money on the item. I can tell you that I've been one of those persons making that mistake. I have a few methods from that website you provided CGU including the one with the pressure cooker set-up. I also have the following ones as a back-up. The Imperial Berkey with multiple filters.... I purchased mine from www.directive21.com/ If I'm not mistaken CGU, you also purchased from the same company. I have the Sawyer Sports bottle in a to go bag. I also have the Katadyn Pocket Filter on another B.O.B. And I have the Sawyer complete 4-Liter system that removes Viruses, Bacteria, and Protozoa in as little as 30 minutes. Includes: a 4-Liter Nylon Dirty Water Dispenser, a 4-Liter Nylon Clean Water Storage Vessel with High Flow Dispensing Cap, a 0.02 Micron Absolute Inline Water Purifier, Faucet Adapter, Drink Tube, Cleaning and Maintenance Instructions. BPA Free. Weight: 20 ounces. Life Expectancy: 1 Million Gallons Guaranteed. I also have the Sawyer 3 way water system as an inline filter on a hydration pack. It also does 1 Million Gallons but lets hope that it never gets to that point.

I just received the black berkey filters that are supposed to "purify" the water. They claim that you can still tell they are working by putting red food dye in the upper chamber and that if they are still working the dye will be filtered out of the purified water.
They're ready for action if needed and I'll build my own bucket system when/if needed.
